Why Jack Trout doesn’t like WOM Marketing

March 31st, 2010

It’s no secret, folks! My admiration for Jack Trout and his works are evident enough in the way I go about using his ideas to  propagate marketing concepts during work and in my writings on my blog. Here’s the thing: I challenge anyone who speaks about ‘viral’ marketing. To me viral marketing is an ‘X’ factor of luck or a windfall effect that comes through for reasons that people find hard to comprehend.  It is also short-term and not sustaining.

The word-of-mouth (WOM) effect is something that makes me feel the same way. Jack Trout, some years ago, wrote an article on WOM in Forbes about how this word-of-mouth marketing phenomenon is getting out of hand. » Read more: Why Jack Trout doesn’t like WOM Marketing

Consumer Behavior 2009: Why I don’t agree with Forrester

September 18th, 2009

consumer-behavior-forrester-researchA couple of weeks ago, Forrester Research released a study on the changing habits of today’s consumer and how tech savvy they had become. The conclusion of the study as noted by the New York Times was that nifty technological gadgetry which, in the past, was highly desired by a small segment of the (early adopters) population was now part of the mainstream.

Forrester CEO George Colony, went so far as to say that today’s customer is unrecognizable from 1999’s customer. And the NY times says that we’re all gadget geeks now.

I disagree… » Read more: Consumer Behavior 2009: Why I don’t agree with Forrester

Call-to-Action Marketing – The 10 Best & Worst Phrases

September 12th, 2009

call-to-action-best-10A call-to-action element on a website or any other web marketing medium is one that entices a reader or viewer to take note or make a decision based upon it.  A website call to action could be something like “Add to Shopping Cart”, “Buy Now” or “Subscribe to Newsletter”.

The main goal of a call to action is to persuade the visitor to click on something or interact further with your website, hopefully resulting in the visitor buying a product or service or another conversion goal. » Read more: Call-to-Action Marketing – The 10 Best & Worst Phrases

Motivated Reasoning – The Irrationality of Human Behavior

August 25th, 2009

motivated-reasoning-thought-processI came across this term in an article on the health care debate on Yahoo.  The article elaborated on the irrational reasons as to why people were on both sides of the health care debate. It also contained a definition of motivated reasoning by sociologist Andrew Perrin of the University of North Carolina. He stated that motivated reasoning was essentially about starting with a conclusion that one hoped to reach and then selectively evaluating evidence in order to reach that conclusion.

I’m always interested in understanding how people think and the reasons for why they act a certain way. And, so, I went back to a book that I had read some time back in business school called Inside consumption: consumer motives, goals, and desires by S. Ratneshwar and David Glen Mick. The authors state that individuals are always aspiring to achieve certain goals in life and some of those goals are met through the marketplace in the form of ‘hope.’ » Read more: Motivated Reasoning – The Irrationality of Human Behavior

Consumer Behavior in a Troubled Economy

August 23rd, 2009

consumer-behavior-in-todays-economyI was reading a couple of articles on consumer behavior  by Dr. Lars Perner, an expert in behavioral psychology at  USC. Consumer Behavior is considered a soft science by managers. In today’s know-it-all marketing environments, managers seems to think that they know what the market wants in terms of products and market research, if any, is conducted to confirm those notions rather than being carried out from an exploratory viewpoint. This is really quite disappointing since good consumer research, sometimes, is the difference between success and failure.

Consumer behavior is about understanding the psychology or processes of how consumers think and how they select  a particular brand or product for their use. This field is also about understanding how consumers are affected by their environment like media, family, work etc and how all those factors affect their buying decisions.  » Read more: Consumer Behavior in a Troubled Economy

Understanding Consumer Buyer Behavior

July 18th, 2009

Understanding Consumer Buyer BehaviorConsumer behavior is the study of the processes involved when individuals or groups select, purchase, use or dispose of products, services, ideas, or experiences to satisfy needs and desires. I’ve penned this based on some of the research I’ve done on the subject to understand online consumer behavior better.

Simply put, Consumer behavior is the science of understanding human behavior with respect to products and situations. » Read more: Understanding Consumer Buyer Behavior
